DAY 9

Dancer extraordinaire Eleanor Powell was one of the first great female dancers of the sound era:

Although her film career was short-lived -- just a dozen movies over a decade -- she created some of the most exciting solo routines (often backed by dozens of chorus boys).

This virtually-unknown number, choreographed by Bobby Connolly for the 1939 movie "Honolulu," just kills us.

It starts with Red Skelton and Bert Lahr (both uncredited) patter singing, and then it quickly gets down to ricky-ticky tapping by Powell, who covers a lot of real estate in this number set on a cruise ship.

(Pay attention to the drummer with whom Powell does mind-boggling things with drumsticks - it’s a 21 year old Buddy Rich:)

We have another wonderful Eleanor Powell number to show you, but first, here are some of the mind-boggling items we’re featuring from our website today:

"Broadway Melody of 1940" was the first movie Fred Astaire did after the amicable dissolution of his partnership with Ginger Rogers.

When the pairing of Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire was announced for this movie, anticipation was sky-high. And, boy, does this Cole Porter number deliver!

Intro’ed by the singing group The Music Maids:

this swing version of “Begin the Beguine” (choreographed once- again by Bobby Connolly), evolves into a tap-fest without musical accompaniment.  Extraordinary!

Powell and Astaire were both famous for rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing.

They rehearsed this number so much they wore out the rehearsal pianist.

Begin the Beguine

OK, here's one more dance by Eleanor Powell.

In this number, she's wearing a pair of harem pants that seem to have their own energy source.

And she has a most-unexpected dance partner:
