In 1982, the TV special “Night of 100
Stars” celebrated the 100th Anniversary of
the Actor’s Fund, which provides a number
of safety nets for performers as their
careers unfold.
The show was such a success that it
spawned a sequel TV special 3 years later.
A highlight of the multi-hour show was
“Red Shoes,” which starts as a typical
variety show song and dance number
(choreographed by Albert Stephenson, the
husband of composer John Kander):
Alfonso
Ribeiro and Dick Van Dyke
and evolves into a showcase for dozens of
the most famous dancers of the 20th
century. Hang on for the last revealed
star, which prompts an uproar from the
audience.
After filming the number, it became clear
to the director that there was a problem
with one of the video cameras, and the
number had to be done from the beginning
all over again.
One of the celebrity dancers, who shall
remain nameless, had so coked himself up
for the first take, that he had a meltdown
when told it had to be danced all over
again. Lucky audience in Radio City Music
hall that night - they got to watch this
extravagant number twice.
