is all about ultra-masculine
dancing.
Can’t you just smell the testosterone?
First up -- "West Side Story":
Director/choreographer Jerome Robbins:
demanded so many takes of this number that
the fed-up dancers, certain there was
sufficient footage, piled up their
kneepads in front of Robbins' on-set
office door and started a bonfire.
Watching this number makes us agree with
the dancers - there was enough footage.
Just thrilling!
In "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,"
Director Stanley Donen:
and Choreographer Michael Kidd:
wanted 6 dancers to play 6 of the seven
“brothers.”
But M-G-M insisted contract player Jeff
Richards (a non-dancer) be cast as a
brother.
Jeff is in orange.
The only time he dances (with Julie
Newmar), they hide him in back.
The unparalleled Tommy Rall is in the red
shirt.
