DAY 16

This number, from the movie "Gold Diggers of 1935," is actually a film-within-a-film.

Sung and partly danced by Wini Shaw:

Dick Powell, Wini Shaw, Adolphe Menjou

"Lullaby of Broadway" turns out to be a cautionary tale.  (Only Warner Brothers -- with its taste for the dark side -- could have gotten away with this in the 1930’s.)

The song won an Oscar for the composer Harry Warren and the lyricist Al Dubin, and Busby Berkeley’s dance direction was nominated for an Oscar.

The dance portion is larger than life -- and is absolutely breathtaking.

It runs about 12 minutes, and is shown here in three parts:

Our second dance selection also features Wini Shaw, but, first, here are some of the breathtaking items we’re featuring from our website today:

Busby Berkeley wasn’t the only one making musicals at Warner Brothers in the 1930’s.

Ray Enright directed "Ready, Willing and Able," which features the too marvelous “Too Marvelous for Words,” a song in which lyricist Johnny Mercer shows off his smarty-pants vocabulary:

The number is punctuated by an imaginative and inventive dance sequence (created by Bobby Connolly) with Ruby Keeler and Lee Dixon:

We can’t imagine how many takes it took to get it perfect.

The pair singing in the beginning are Wini Shaw (as promised) and Ross Alexander:

Prepare to be dazzled:
